The Friends donated over €47,000 to enable the hospital to purchase a GE Logiq P5 Pro Ultrasound Machine. This ultrasound machine is for dedicated use in the Oncology Unit by Consultant Oncologists on patients who require interventions.
Dexa Scanner (2007)
In 2007 the Friends focused on fundraising towards providing a Dexa Scanner for the hospital. This fundraising campaign was hugely supported by Riverdance with all proceed from two shows in May 2007 in Letterkenny going towards this campaign. A Dexa Scanner is used to scan the skeletal system to check bone density with emphasis on diagnosing osteoporosis. It can predict the risk of fracture and help to identify patients who would benefit from taking preventative measures or treatment. It is currently the most accurate and reliable means of assessing the strength of your bones and your risk of breaking a bone.
Acute Mental Health Unit
In early 2012, the new Psychiatric Unit was formally opened at Letterkenny General Hospital. After a huge fundraising campaign the Friends donated in excess of €750,000 to this project. This new unit replaced an existing Psychiatric Unit on the same location and helped bring patient comforts to an exceptionally high level in a modern day Mental Health Service unit. The Friends ensured that the completed unit included facilities such as courtyards and gardens, games and pastime facilities and family rooms, which might not otherwise have been possible.
Intra Aortic Balloon Pump for Cardiology Department
An Intra Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP) is used widely in assisting critically ill patients with cardiac disease. The primary goal of IABP treatment is to provide temporary assistance to the failing heart and aid the regulation myocardial oxygen supply and demand.
