The first project that the “Friends” took on board was the CAT Scan Appeal. The appeal to raise funds for the CAT Scanner was a particularly high profile and successful campaign which raised over €625,000 in less than two years.

A CT Scanner is a sophisticated piece of radiological equipment used to identify the presence of cancer and to assess the severity of a head injury.

CT scans are used mainly to provide information for procedures such as biopsies, or to form an opinion on the treatment of suspected cancers.

CT scans are also carried out to examine the internal structures of the body such as:

  • The head after injuries or to detect tumours and infections
  • The spine and vertebral discs
  • The density of bone – to detect osteoporosis
  • The chest – to identify tumours, cysts, or infections
  • Body organs such as the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, aorta, kidneys, uterus, and ovaries.
